We are pleased to announce Verweven | Interwoven, an exhibition at The Kendrew Barn Gallery bringing together artists from Magdalen Road Studios in Oxford, UK and Ars Aemula

Naturae in Leiden, the Netherlands to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Oxford Leiden Link.

The exhibition celebrates the strength and vitality of weaving cultures and artistic practices together, and explores how nature, friendship and creative exchange can transcend borders. The spirit of the exhibition is reflected not only in the artworks, but in the shared experiences and acts of generosity that have made the project possible.

The exhibition has grown through processes of making art, both individually and collectively; through conversations and the exchange of ideas; through hosting two artist residencies from Leiden; and through the simple pleasures of sharing homemade food. It is a collaboration built on enthusiasm and friendship, self-funded and sustained through the determination and commitment of the artists themselves and their respective studio collectives.

Two of the artists, Matilde Zijp and Pauline Ymke Meijer, travelled from Leiden to Oxford to undertake residencies at Magdalen Road Studios. Alongside a special showing of work produced during these residencies, the exhibition brings together painting, drawing, photography, textiles, ceramics and installation, showcasing the breadth and diversity of artistic practices represented by the two organisations. Photographic material documenting the 80-year history of the Oxford Leiden Link will also be displayed.

Oxford and Leiden established what is recognised as the oldest city twinning for Oxford, initiated in the aftermath of the Second World War at a time of political uncertainty about international alliances. The twinning was founded on the belief that friendship and cultural exchange between communities could help build lasting connections across national borders.

The goal of collaboration feels no less relevant today. At a time of increasing political uncertainty and environmental challenges, Verweven | Interwoven offers a small but tangible example of what can happen when people come together across borders: making, sharing, learning from one another and building relationships through art. Collectively, the exhibition is both a celebration of an enduring friendship between two cities and an act of renewal.
